Topic Brainstorm
The Deva and Devi. I am not familiar with the Indian gods and goddesses, yet the more I have been doing research over topics to write about this semester, the more my interest grows in this area. From the storytelling research, I feel I am definitely interested in writing about Saraswati. I plan on going to the library try to find her comic book soon. I noticed that she is also a goddess of music and is depicted with a vita. This gave me an idea where Saraswati would form a band that has the power to defeat demons. I'm not sure if I could implement this idea, but I'm sure it would be a fun one to try.
Animals. I find learning about the significance about certain animals across different cultures fascinating, and Indian culture is no exception (even though I know nothing about this either). What are especially interesting are the divine mounts and other animals associated with the gods and goddesses: Airavata, Indra's elephant; Garuda, Vishnu's eagle; the swan and peacock associated with Saraswati; and so on. I guess it's the birds and elephants that I like.
Nagas. I think I may have stated before that I had an interesting in researching nagas for storytelling, and I could see them as a potential project topic as well. The extent of my knowledge over nagas is limited to when I have been exposed to in video games: monsters with a human top half and a reptilian bottom half. I am not sure what to do with them story-wise, but I do want to research them further, like Kadru, Ulupi, and Kaliya.
Music. Like everything else, I do not know too much about Indian music, both current and historic. My knowledge goes as far as knowing what a sitar is and loving the sound of it. Looking at this project idea made me think back to that idea of the gods or otherwise forming a band to defeat demons, a divine battle of the bands, or even some kind of dance off. Again, I am not sure if I could pull off these ideas, but they are still fun ideas.
